What Are The Stakes

I was working on my memoir “I’m Not Who You Say I Am” and today it finally clicked for me. Every new writer of memoir worries about delivering the narrative arc in such a way that it will seem to read almost effortlessly. The beginning, the middle, and the end. But in memoir you must start your first chapter with a scene where the stakes are high. What is it that you’re going through, experiencing, giving up or something else, that will hook the reader into staying engaged with your story. The first opening chapter or for that matter the first line, can make or break your story. It will determine whether they get bored and put your book down. This is important to know.
